Learning outcomes

Formulate an astronomically interesting scientific problem and write an observing time application for one of the top observatories in the world (eg. at ESO, NOT, OPTICON, VLA or EVN).

The best telescope and instrument combination is evaluated for solving the astronomical problem. Comprehension of the technical aspectsof the combination of the selected telescope and instrument. Calculation of signal-to.noise values and integration times. Critical self-evaluation of the observing time application. Note that writing up a telescope proposal is usually an iterative process and may take several rounds and even a different set of telescope and instruments than originally thought.
