Learning outcomes

The student shall know the basic structure of the Sun and understand its complex and dynamic nature. The student shall be familiar with the physical mechanisms that create solar activity, and also know how the different types of activity can be observed and measured.

Contents

The Sun as a star; interior and atmosphere. The "quiet" Sun and its features (bright points, filaments, coronal holes, solar wind, etc.). Eruptive features (flares, filament eruptions, coronal mass ejections, shock waves, etc.). Observations and data, with focus on radio emission and multi-wavelength analysis. The use of Solarsoft (a set of integrated software libraries, data bases, and system utilities which provide a common programming and data analysis environment for solar physics). Emission mechanisms (plasma emission, bremsstrahlung, synchrotron) and methods of identification. Theoretical models for flares and associated phenomena.
