Learning outcomes

After the course the student has a basic knowledge of the application of spectroscopy in astronomy.

Contents

Spectroscopic instrumentation: splitless, longslit, echelle and integral field spectroscopy. Atmospheric effects on spectral data. Typical reduction and data characteristics. Quantum mechanical background: atomic and molecular spectra, emission and absorption mechanisms. Zeeman effect and spectropolarimetry. Spectral modelling. Typical spectral features and their astrophysical applications from radio to gamma-rays.
