General description

This course is part of compulsory KTE-studies for biology students. For exchange or JOO-students this introductory course is required before other evolutionary studies in later periods of the year.

Learning outcomes

To understand how evolutionary forces shape the genetic architcture of natural and captive populations including human beings. Understand how molecular level studies can be used to gain data on past evolutionary forces and their consequences on present populations. Convince students that both ecology and genetics are needed for studies of evolution.

Contents

The first part of the course introduces more detailed ways on how genetics is used to study evolution from molecular level to phenotypic traits. The latter part uses lectures, problem sessions and discussions to cover interaction between environmental and genetic factors (GxE), contraints to adaptations, life-history evolution, evolution of sex, sexual selection, evolutionary factors in human traits like health, speciation and phylogeny.

All biology majors need to pass Genetics of populations (Populaatioiden genetiikka) before this course.
