Preceding studies
Basic knowledge of evolutionary biology (e.g. equivalent of that taught in the course: FYGE2211 Genetics of Natural Populations) and molecular genetics (e.g. SOMO1001-2 Molecular biolog)y will be assumed . Students interested in taking the course who do not fulfill this requirement should contact the organizers to arrange background reading prior to the start of the course. Learning outcomes

The aims of this course are to introduce the theory and practice of phylogenetic inference from molecular data and to provide an introduction to some of the most used methods and computer programs. These include methods such as parsimony, maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference and distance estimates.


The course will consist of lectures, demonstrations of computer programs, independent projects on fully analysing an example dataset (either your own or given by the lecturer), discussions and a final seminar presenting the results of the independent projects. Independent projects can be done alone or in pairs. Most programs we will be using will be freeware or shareware. If you would like to analyse your own datasets, please be aware that they should consist of at least two genes and must not exceed 30 taxa (otherwise analysis times will exceed the course duration!).
