Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to give postgraduate students a taste of "life after PhD"; by opinion sharing and discussions about various skills which may be required in a research career (in Finland or abroad).

Discussions on subjects like time management; obtaining your own funding; how to establish a collaborator network; maximising the benefits of attending a conference; arranging seminars and conferences; publishing and getting published, which journal, impact factors, authorship issues etc.; how to find and choose a post-doc position; reviewing manuscripts and responding to reviewer comments. Many of these topics have recently been covered in the 'Ten simple rules' series in PLoS Computational Biology, and these articles will be used for prior reading when appropriate. Additional topics that students feel are important can also be covered.
