EKOL2321 From Individuals to Population 4 ECTS

Learning outcomes

This course provides the theoretical background for why and how we can use individual-based information to gain insights in ecology and evolution. It also provides hands-on experience on the methods of tracking the movement, survival and reproduction of individuals, and on the analysis of such data. No previous experience is required. It is a complement (but not a requirement) to the course “Population Estimation and Monitoring Methods” with which it alternates.

Contents

Much of ecology and evolution deals with population-level processes. However, if we want to get a detailed understanding of such processes, we often need to study them at the level of the individual. For example, reproduction, survival, movement and dispersal are processes of obvious importance for the population which can be studied in a detailed manner when working on individuals.
