Knowledge of topics covered in SOMO1001-2 Molecular biology, SOMO1025 Bioinformatics. Students interested in taking the course who do not fulfill this requirement should contact the organizers to arrange background reading prior to the start of the course.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the use of genomics as a tool to study ecological processes and introduce the new emerging field of ecological genomics.

Contents

This course surveys the basic principles and approaches of ecological genomics and presents recent findings made in a diverse range of species with special emphasis to natural populations. We will introduce currently available research strategies for dissecting functionally important genetic variation introducing available neutraliy tests and cover various genomic techniques such as high-throughput sequencing and genotyping, gene expression analyses using microarrays, proteomics in non-model organisms, quantitative PCR, comparative genomic hybridization, quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping, linkage disequilbrium analyses and other methods.
