General description

The lecture course is given as a web-casted, real-time on-line conference, with two separate lectures (1h 15min each) and a 30 min Qustion and Answer session, given at ten different European universities (Universities of Turku, Finland; Napoli, Italy; Orleans, France; Salzburg, Austria; Dresden, Germany; Szcecin, Poland; CNES Paris, France; St. Petersburg, Russia; Paris Est Creteil, France; DLR Köln, Germany and ESA/ESTEC). The material is supported by the book Horneck G. and Rettberg, P. (ed.) Complete course in astrobiology, 2007, ISBN: 978-3-527-40660-9, Wiley-VCH.

Learning outcomes

To provide expert lectures in central topics of astrobiology, to promote international collaboration and contact in this interdisciplinary field, and to activate students for personal participation in the question periods.

Contents

Central topics of astrobiology, including cosmic evolution, formation of stars and planetary systems, prebiotic chemistry, origin of life, habitability, adaptation of life to extreme conditions; astrobiology of Mars, Titan, Europa, Enceladus and comets; planetary protection, chemistry in cosmic dust, space missions.
