General description

Academic writing course designed for doctoral level students from the faculty of medicine and, if there is room, from the natural sciences.

Learning outcomes

After the course the students should have an advanced knowledge of how to write academically with special relation to the field of medicine. The student should be able to recognize and produce academic text and be aware of the internal structure of research articles in their own field. They will be aware of the cultural differences relating to perceptions of what is considered to be good academic writing. They should have a greater understanding of the mechanics of writing a research paper and be able to write and punctuate accurately in English.


In this course students practice the skills needed to write academically in English for international journals and at the same time cover aspects of grammar and lexis. Items include academic vocabulary, textual organisation and flow, punctuation and the format and structure of academic articles. Students use their own texts as the basis of analysis and also get a chance to have their own work reviewed and checked. Much of the course is internet-based.
