General description

Academic writing course designed for Masters' level students to cover the core elements of academic grammar and style.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should:
- be able to write a short text in an academic style;
- understand the difference between formal and informal language in an academic context and know how academic and other text styles differ;
- have an understanding of the structure of academic research articles and be able to identify the language and features inherent to different parts,
know how to write academic paragraphs;
be aware of several devices used to ensure their text flows and is cohesive;
- know how to summarize, paraprase and reference according to the requirements of their discipline;
be able to punctuate well in English.

Contents

Topics covered on the course are:
- academic writing genres;
- academic style and formal vocabulary;
- punctuation;
- paragraph structure;
- academic grammar - articles, nominalisation, passives, cleft sen-tences, clauses;
- the format and organization of academic texts.
- reading authentic academic texts taken from journals and textbooks;
- consolidating academic vocabulary based on the Academic Word List (AWL);
- becoming aware of Anglo-American writing conventions leading to a written assignment.

For credit, students must attend a minimum of 80% of the contact lessons and core lectures; complete a final course assignment, participate actively and complete course tasks.

Essay 3-4 pages or 10-12 pages for biomedical imaging students.
