Learning outcomes

After the course the student knows the names of about 100 ecologically and economically important tropical plant families and is able to identify plants with typical characteristics to the correct family.

Contents

The most important diagnostic characteristics of the families are explained and illustrated using photographs and both fresh and dried plant specimens. Plant identification is further practiced during excursions to Ruissalo Botanical Garden. It is strongly recommended that students visit the Ruissalo Garden on their own for further practice.

Teaching methods

Lectures, demonstrations, excursion to the Ruissalo Botanical Garden. Plant specimens, photographic material and internet links are provided to facilitate self-study.
