Learning outcomes

To get acquainted with the use of various imaging techniques in preclinical research, e.g. to indentify disease pathways, to evaluate drug compounds and monitor their effects on disease, to investigate mechanisms of action in a living animal, and to characterize phenotypic properties of genetically modified animals.

Contents

Relevant mouse/rat models are exploited as examples. The techniques with potential models include:
- Optical imaging with fluorescence (a tumor model) and with bioluminescence (reporter mice)
- MicroPET/CT (an inflammation model)
- MicroCT (ex vivo; bone phenotype, osteoporosis, bone metastases)
- pQCT (ex vivo and in vivo; osteoporosis, regulation of bone)
- Radiography (osteoporosis, osteopetrosis, bone dimensions)
- Ultrasound (an atherosclerosis model)
