After this course the student will understand processes such as innovation management, product concept development, new product development and project management in product development and having the ability to apply the above skills in practical engineering work. The course creates engineering context to more in-depth business, management, and futures studies by focusing in connecting the studies to the engineering context. This is done by focusing on the possibilities of technology-service convergence and technology servitization. In addition, the students are able to understand the possibilities of technology-enabled services as an engine of growth. Students are also able to understand the effects of technological change to organizations and people. Thus being able to measure technological development, manage emerging science and technologies (foresight) and create practical scenarios for the future.


The course explains product development theories, innovation management processes, merging services with technology, and enabling service creation through technological innovation. The course is divided to two sections, management of technology and technological forecasting. The management section focuses on product, process and business model innovation. The forecasting section covers methods of measuring technological change with both qualitative and quantitative methods and implications of change in technologies. The lectures consist of a lecture section and discussion section based on assigned readings and exercises for each week.
