KIEN3024 Writing Grant Proposals 2 ECTS
Organised by
Centre for Language and Communication St./English
Person in charge
Suzanne Collins

General description

The Writing Grant Proposals course is designed for doctoral candidates from all faculties who need to apply for grants and who would need help with the English language and structure of their applications in order to write competitive proposals.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the course participants should be able to write appropriate and effective grant proposals. Students should have a good understanding of the elements that make up a proposal and be aware of the differing levels of information needed be given. In this the notion of audience is key: proposals need to be understood and acted upon by both experts and non-experts in the adjudicating panel.

Contents

Working on their own proposals and using class-based exercises, students will cover effective language choices such as the use of the passive and active voice and vocabulary choices. The rhetorical 'moves' of Swales (2012) will be used as a framework to examine the structure of proposals and how that affects the reader's experience of the text. Both a language expert and an active academic researcher with extensive experience in applying for grants will provide support for students during the course.
