General description

The Academic Writing for Researchers at Distance is a self-study course designed for doctoral candidates from all faculties who need to write articles for international publication and who would need help with writing accurately in English. It is specifically aimed at those researchers who live outside of Turku and so are unable to attend the courses run in the university.

Learning outcomes

After the course the students should:
- have an advanced knowledge of how to write academically with special relation to the field of medicine.
- be able to recognize and produce academic text and be aware of the internal structure of research articles in their own field.
- be aware of the cultural differences relating to perceptions of what is considered to be good academic writing.
- have a greater understanding of the mechanics of writing a research paper.
- be able to write and punctuate accurately in English.

Contents

In this course students practice the skills needed to write academically in English for international journals and at the same time cover aspects of grammar and lexis. Items include academic vocabulary, writing an IMRAD article, abstracts, cultural issues in writing, punctuation and the format and structure of academic Students use their own texts as the basis of analysis and also get a chance to have their own work reviewed and checked.
