General description

This academic writing course is designed for Master’s level students. It aims to cover the core elements of academic style and grammar, with an emphasis on students being able to produce clear and concise texts to a good academic standard, following the academic conventions of style and formality.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should:
- understand the difference between formal and informal language in an academic context
- be able to recognise academic vocabulary, and be able to use it accurately
- be able to construct effective paragraphs, utilising features such as topic sentences
- have increased their awareness of written grammar and other devices used in academic English
- be able to apply these principles in order to write an academic paper
- have developed skills in peer review and peer feedback, working in a multidisciplinary environment

Contents

The course covers topics including:
- academic style and vocabulary
- punctuation and using articles
- creating cohesion and flow in texts using sentence structure and paragraph structure,
- the format and organization of academic texts

The course is designed to enable students to gain confidence and proficiency in writing academic texts. Therefore, students are expected to produce various written texts throughout the course.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Pass/fail.
Pass or fail dependent on 80% active participation in class activities and successful completion of exercises for independent work.

Recommended year of study

Preferably 1st year of Master's degree studies.
