Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: A1-C1 (KIEN 1069; KIEN2069; KIEN3069)

General description

With teacher support, students will design and carry out a self-study programme that meets their own individual needs. A flexible alternative to classroom-based courses.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:
- assess themselves as English language learners;
- build on their past language learning experiences to help in future planning;
- recognise their strengths and weaknesses;
- recognise the language learning strategies they use;
- plan a suitable self-study programme to meet their own objectives;
- know how to achieve their goals;
- know how to continue their language learning after the course finishes.

There are three optional ways of working (all using Moodle):
- Face to face. There are three 2-hour group meetings with the teacher (beginning, middle and end of semester), as well as individual counselling sessions with the teacher, as often as needed. Students will then work independently on materials and activities either at home or in the Self-study Room.
- Distance learning. It is also possible to do a distance learning version of the course (combined with face-to-face meetings whenever possible).
- Self-study group discussion group. This is an option for students, preferably from the same field (e.g. Education), to work together in a small group consisting of no more than 5/6 participants. A "training" session will be held as the first meeting of the group; the discussion groups will then be coordinated by a group leader and the teacher.
- An English tutor is available for support.

Further information on prerequisites and recommendations

Full-time degree students will have priority for places on the course. Exchange students are welcome if there are free places.
