General description

This introductory course is intended for students in the Faculty of Law to help them develop their skills in reading, listening and speaking.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should:
- be able to identify and use key legal terms in the areas of law covered by the course, and have an appreciation of how these terms function in the wider context of English-speaking legal cultures.
- be familiar with basic features of written legal English.
- be able to read a variety of legal texts effectively.
- be able to participate in pair and small group discussions focussing on legal cases and topics.
- be able to engage in active listening.
- be able to employ critical thinking skills in problem solving.

Contents

- reading authentic legal texts from textbooks, law dictionaries, court decisions, and legal documents.
- developing strategies to enable effective reading of legal texts.
- viewing and listening to audio-visual materials on legal cases.
- participating in pair and small group discussions, and giving brief presentations.

Exams:
1. Students cannot take more than one module at the same time.
2. The English courses must be taken in sequential order.
3. No extra written assignments can compensate for the 75% attendance rule.
4. Students are required to register for one group and remain in that group.
5. The Exemption Exam for Modules 1 and 2 will be held on 2.9.2015 at 8-12, Cal3. Registration for the exam by e-mail (oik-tentti(at)utu.fi) until 1.9.2015. Registration for all the exams is required according to the Rules of the Law Faculty.
