Learning outcomes

Understand challenges in cyber physical system (CPS) design, obtain knowledge of cyber-physical systems applications, understand specifications and modeling approaches for real-time and cyber physical systems, understand distributed embedded system hardware (sensors, actuators, processing units, memories, communication, and A/D & D/A conversion), understand distributed embedded system software, and operating systems, is able to design and implement hardware and software for a CPS application.


Embedded systems together with their physical environment are called cyber-physical systems. Examples include systems such as Automotive Electronics, Robotics, Smart Homes, Railways, Consumer Electronics, Military, Medical Systems, etc. Systems have the potential to alter radically the way in which people interact with their environment by linking a range of devices and sensors that will allow information to be collected, shared, and processed in unprecedented ways. Topics covered include specification models and languages using shared memory or message passing communication, hardware devices such as sensors, actuators, processing units and memories, and converters, and wired/wireless communication media. Real-time operating systems and middleware will be also covered briefly. Several application areas and examples will be discussed from their common characteristics, requirements and implementation point of view. In the exercises and lab demonstrations, Cyber Physical Systems are implemented using different platforms such as Arduino, Ell-i, Raspberry Pi, Intel Galileo and Panda Board and a set of various sensors/actuators, including both software and hardware.
