General description

The aim of the course is to offer students a basic knowledge of the Finnish language so that they can cope with some situations linked with everyday life.

Learning outcomes

After the course students should know how to pronounce Finnish. They should also be familiar with the vocabulary and phraseology they need in simple everyday situations. Students will be able to ask simple questions and to answer easy questions.

Contents

Greetings, simple questions, countries and nationalities, the numbers, the days of the week and months, food and eating; phrases connected to these subjects.

The course includes pronunciation exercises, listening comprehension exercises, communication tasks and pair work. It concentrates on practical language use, grammar is discussed to a lesser extent.

The Survival Course is directed at those students who do not intend to continue with their Finnish studies. If you want to continue with Beginners' Course II in the Spring semester, you will have to choose Beginners' Course I in the Autumn semester.
