General description

Academic writing course designed for Masters' level students to cover the core elements of academic grammar and style.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should:
- be able to write a short text in an academic style
- understand the difference between formal and informal language in an academic context
- be aware of how academic and other text styles differ
- have an understanding of the structure of academic research articles and be able to identify the language and features inherent
- know how to write academic paragraphs
- be aware of several devices used to ensure their text flows and is cohesive
- know how to summarize, paraphrase and reference according to the requirements of their discipline
- be able to punctuate well in English

Contents

Topics covered on the course are:
- academic writing genres
- academic style and formal vocabulary
- punctuation
- paragraph structure
- academic grammar - articles, nominalisation, passives, cleft sentences, clauses
- the format and organization of academic texts
- reading authentic academic texts taken from journals and textbooks
- consolidating academic vocabulary based on the Academic Word List (AWL) and Academic Collocation List
- becoming aware of Anglo-American writing conventions leading to a written assignment

Students from Biomedical Imaging and Baltic Sea Region Studies are required to complete a 3 credit version of this course. To receive an extra credit, they will be complete a longer assignment of 10 - 12 pages on a topic directly related to their discipline OR complete a package of self-study materials.
