Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes
The student will be equipped to discuss the major themes and stylistic approaches of the period, as well as to attach these cinematic aspects to major socio-political discussions. By way of documentary cinema, the student will also come to understand the basic affinities and differences between the nations that make up the Baltic Sea Region (particularly Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany). After the course, the student will have acquired basic vocabulary and historical understanding to discuss the relationship between the cultural and the socio-political milieus of the region, a skill they can then can then use and apply in relation to other art forms and media.

Contents

Contents
The course is structured around four major themes that are particularly popular in post-1989 documentary films from the region: society & history, identity, family & generations, and vulnerable bodies. The course addresses the larger political frames of these themes as well as the specific ways in which they are approached and discussed in documentary cinema. Although the focus is on documentary film, examples are drawn also from fiction film, video art and installations.
