Learning outcomes

This course sets an objective to place the discussion of energy and shipping in the framework of sustainable development. It discusses the three interconnected facets of sustainability (economy, environment and social) with specific reference to challenges arising from transition in the energy and maritime sectors. The students will learn about the environmental state of the Baltic Sea and the current and future policies undertaken by littoral states and international organizations to mitigate adverse effects of shipping. A special emphasize will be put upon the environmental dimension of energy transition in the BSR, i.a. technical aspects (new modes of energy) and relation to transport, infrastructure and development. The course will also cover a broad range of EU policy aspects: economy (in particular commercial shipping and energy transport), maritime spatial planning, international environmental cooperation, the role of the EU policies for sustainability governance in the BSR. Upon completion of the course students will have broaden their understanding of the complex interaction of environment, economy and politics, and gain an insight of the current challenges to sustainability governance in the Baltic Sea region. During the last session a role game will offer the students a close up experience of the challenges in maritime spatial planning.
