Learning outcomes

Students become acquainted with the idiosyncrasies of four modern Nordic countries and their development trends and structural changes during the past three centuries. They will be able to analyze causal chains of modernization in the context of the Baltic Sea region.

Contents

The lecture course will examine the industrialization of Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, from the 18th century to 2010. The theme will be approached from the viewpoint of comparative economic and social history, and cross-country comparison is focused on national characteristics of industrializa¬tion as well as differences and similarities of these countries. The roles of the key production factors, natural resources, capital, labour and technology, will be analyzed. In addition, Nordic case studies are also put in the Baltic Sea region setting as well as in a broader international context, while it is aimed to explain why these latecomer countries managed to find their niches where they became trailblazers and even world leaders – at least for some decades. The course also deals with connections between industrialization and the rise of Nordic welfare states. As a result, the course attempts provide an economic and social interpretation on the modernization of Nordic countries.

Modes of study

The proficiency of students is assessed by an exam of 2 ECTS and an original research essay of 3 ECTS. The reading list will be posted on the Moodle website of the course.
