Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the critical role that intellectual assets and property play in commercial activities within the knowledge economy. The aim is that the students have skills to recognize the important intangible assets of an organization and can manage the intellectual property efficiently.

Contents

The course is focused on delivering an understanding of the role of intellectual assets and property in innovation and business strategy. A particular emphasis is put on technology-based innovation and the use of patents and other IPRs to support technology-based business. The fundamental intellectual property concepts and strategies are delivered through lectures and exercises. The course will address the following subjects:
- Intellectual Property Rights: especially patents, copyright and trademarks
- Managing and using IPRs in business
- Trade secrets and their role in business
- Intangible assets and their relations to IPRs
- Agreements related to IPRs
- Corporate strategies for intellectual property
