Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to familiarize oneself with the selected issues in innovation management. The student learns to understand the systemic view on innovations and its usefulness in analyzing and comparing different companies and countries and their innovative operations. In addition, the student perceives understanding how innovation systems can be utilized for promoting technological capabilities and firm's long-term growth. The student will learn to use innovation literature and frameworks to develop concepts and to analyze real life problems. The role of creativity and its effects on the firm, and management of innovation and technological capabilities an international context form the central aspects for this learning. The course enhances the student's analytical abilities, problem solving skills and management abilities for innovation. The course also enables him/her to independently develop new solution approaches and to cope better with the requirements of the inherent complexity. The student improves her/his ability to synthesize exiting knowledge and evaluate situations and information for a real-life innovation task.
The course builds independent reading, analytical thinking, problem solving, knowledge application and managerial skills.


The course consists of separate themes. Each theme accounts for two credits. Themes may vary annually. In 2014-2016 the course includes three themes:

Career Management (2 cr)

This theme is available only for GIM Master's degree programme students. They need to return their portfolios to Birgitta Sandberg for the course registration.

Enhancing Creativity in an International Firm (2 cr)
The student learns to contemplate the concept of creativity and analyze how it can be increased and utilized in an organization. Understanding, analysis and identification of problems and development of solutions constitute the learning logic of this theme. Special attention is paid to the challenges and opportunities that the international business setting creates for the creativity enhancement. Application of knowledge from other IB courses (i.e. intercultural competencies and communication) is expected and the learning outcome is presented in the form of an essay.

Innovation systems and technological capabilities (2 cr)
The student becomes familiar with the innovation systems in Finland and abroad. Emphasis is on developing countries NIS and analysis of innovation systems on regional and sectoral levels. Student also builds understanding on how innovation systems can promote technological capability development and firm's long-term growth. Student is expected to combine and apply the knowledge from their previous studies and present the learning outcome in the form of an essay.

Teaching methods

KVS54 is available in any period. The course consists of independents study. In addition, the Career Management theme (FUTU3/KVS54) has a mandatory kick-off session. Contact Birgitta Sandberg for further information.
