General description

Learning outcomes

The objective is to give students basic understanding about key planning issues and challenges in the Baltic Sea Region. Students learn to position national and transnational policy-making in the BSR and its diverse countries within the larger EU context, and learn to acknowledge the multi-scalar, cross-sector and transnational nature of spatial planning. Furthermore, students learn useful presentation and communication skills that are needed in the working life related to spatial planning and policy-making at diverse administrative scales and geographical contexts.

Contents

Planning topics and challenges in the BSR and its diverse regions and countries are discussed in relation to wider European Union spatial policy and planning dimension, thus giving students basic information about planning at the EU scale. Also recent developments in planning theory are critically discussed in the context of concrete planning challenges in the BSR. Furthermore, the EU’s macro-regional strategy for the BSR, as well as other key spatial visions, is discussed together with cross-border cooperation and future governance challenges. In addition to interactive seminars, students work with practical exercises related to concrete planning challenges in the BSR
