Learning outcomes

The students are familiarized with the unique ecological, hydrological and geological evolutions and contemporary conditions of the Baltic Sea. These biophysical factors are examined in close associations with human action, giving special focus on energy related issues and challenges. What is more, students gain deeper theoretic understanding about construing the governance of environment and energy related processes in a regional context. These outcomes are achieved firstly through lecturers providing knowledge from the different fields of operations (e.g. transport, climate change, energy security, harbours); and secondly via opening methodological discussions concerning the inter-relatedness of economy, ecology and culture.

Contents

This course opens perspectives to the pressuring challenges related to energy and environment, and further, unfolds their historical constitution in the Baltic Sea region. Indeed, the Baltic itself has been argued to be among the most polluted seas in the world and the global climate change is likely to make the situation even worse. Processes like eutrophication and land-use changes are in the nexuses of political, economic, environmental and social factors, which make the solving of these pressuring challenges naturally multi-disciplinary. Moreover, the legal and political framework of the Baltic is multi-scalar as the municipalities, nation states, the European Union, HELCOM and United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea are being intertwined in tackling the manifold environmentally detrimental processes in this fragile sea area.
