Learning outcomes

The Business Development laboratory is targeted to commercialization of ideas and turning innovative ideas into business. After this course the students will be able to create a business plan for a new venture; be able to successfully apply the learned knowledge for development of a new product or business concept and be able to understand how modern technologies can support and create value for the business. The student will have the ability to systematically explore and create ideas or modify existing ideas for feasible business solutions and have a holistic understanding of the interaction between business functions within a company and of different phases of a business development process. After the course the student will also have enhanced ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and have stronger presentation skills to market a new venture.

Contents

The students will work in teams with a realistic business idea and learn to refine the idea to such a point that it can be seriously considered as a basis for creating a business, including the business ecosystem as a whole. The result of this process will be documented in a business plan. The Business Development Laboratory is built according to the principles of learning by doing.

Teaching methods

Active participation in lectures and seminars, the course contains mentoring sessions with personal mentor(s), and presentations of the business plan to a panel of specialists.

The course assessment is based on a written business plan (60 %), oral presentations (20 %) and active participation (20%).

To all faculties at the University of Turku. To specific Masters' Degree programme students at Åbo Akademi University. Students from Turku School of Economics can also apply for the whole study module or solely for the Business Development Laboratory course (7 ECTS).

The IBC study module students need to complete 'BIDI0002 Introduction to innovation and business' and 'BIDI1002 Intermediate course on Business Management of Start-ups' (for non business majors) courses.
