Learning outcomes

This course aims at developing an appreciation of the role of entrepreneurship from the broader societal perspective. After completing this course the students will have developed a comprehensive understanding of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs within different institutional (cultural/political), geographical and social contexts. Further, the course addresses different contexts of entrepreneurship and the heterogeneity of entrepreneurs by discussing "niche" forms of entrepreneurship, such as ethnic, rural, senior and social entrepreneurship. The students will be able to apply theoretical concepts to explore contexts for entrepreneurship as well as the role of entrepreneurs for society and economic development.

Contents

A particular attention is paid to recent developments in cultural and institutional theories of entrepreneurship, while selected empirical studies and practical cases are used to support the lectures and group discussions. The course critically analyses the role of public policy intervention in favour of entrepreneurs and small businesses. The course comprises lectures and discussions. During the course students will also practice their research and presentation skills, and strengthen their abilities in critical analysis as they study and conduct group work.

Group work

In addition to active participation in lectures and individual literature study, the course includes a significant group work component where students critically analyse entrepreneurial activity in different contexts through selected theoretical lenses. The course is assessed as a whole and it is necessary to pass both the exam and group assignment in order to pass the whole course.
