Learning outcomes

Informal entrepreneurship has attracted much interest and debate worldwide. Currently it has been referred as being the fastest growing sector globally, appearing in new forms and new places. The majority of the informal economic behavior is allocated into unproductive or even destructive activities and in less developed economies where informal economy exists for various reasons, such as unstable formal institutional arrangements. Nowadays, however, new forms of informal entrepreneurship take place in developed economies. In this course the perspective is extended outside of the traditional bottom-of-pyramid aspects, and the focus is on new examples of informality. For example, companies such as AirBnB, Über, Kickstarter, and alternative currencies, have shown how profitable businesses can be built by leveraging the informality.
After completing this course the student understands what informal entrepreneurship is in developed economies and what is it role and influence in the society.

Whether it is a case of unregistered businesses or illegal forms of economic rent-seeking, this course enables students to develop an understanding of content and the role of informal entrepreneurship in the society. Moreover, the course opens up new perspectives on entrepreneurial processes leading to economic transactions which take place under the radar of conventional development thinking. Through readings, i.e. scholarly articles, and case studies, the course covers various perspectives to informal entrepreneurship.
