All students must have basic knowledge of European law. Knowledge of commercial law may also be an advantage. The students of the Faculty of Law (=LIS and OTM students) must have completed the foundational courses on European law ("eurooppaoikeuden perusteet”), or equivalent. It is also recommended that they have completed a foundational course on commercial law ("kauppaoikeuden perusteet").

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is provide students with a thorough understanding of the basic rules and principles governing the internal market of the EU. Students will be expected both to apply and to analyze and evaluate critically the main norms related to the four freedoms of the EU. They will also have an opportunity to engage actively with some of the key problem areas of internal market law.

- The personal scope of the four freedoms
- The notion of restriction on free movement
- The 'wholly internal' rule
- Justifications and derogations
- The principle of proportionality
- Regulating the internal market

A law student of the Faculty of Law may continue to work with his or her essay and expand it into a bachelor's thesis (ON-seminaarityö).
