Learning outcomes

This course aims to foster a critical understanding of key issues in the WTO multilateral trading system. In particular, the course aims to:
- Enhance the knowledge of the rules governing trade in the light of the WTO Agreements;
- Explore how the WTO rules impact on governments, businesses, and individuals;
- Reinforce student`s capacities of strategic analysis and application in an international environment;
- Encourage in depth and independent study and learning.
By the end of this course students should have a critical understanding of the WTO Agreements.


Topic 1: Introduction to WTO law and institutions
Topic 2: Trade in goods (the GATT Agreement)
Topic 3: Trade in services (the GATS Agreement)
Topic 4: WTO and intellectual property rights (the TRIPs Agreement)
Topic 5: Trade remedies: safeguards, anti-dumping, subsidies and countervailing duties
Topic 6: WTO dispute settlement system
Topic 7: WTO and the EU
Topic 8: Trade and environment
Topic 9: WTO and regional economic integration
Topic 10: Issues with developed and developing countries
