Preceding studies
Basic studies in commercial, contract, international and European law are recommended as previous studies. It is recommended to study "Introduction to International Intellectual Property Law" course before this course. For the LIS Master's students, the course "Introduction to International Intellectual Property Law" (TLS_0067)is a required previous study for enrolling in this optional course.

Learning outcomes

The students will understand the foundations of European intellectual property law in context. They will comprehend patents, copyright, trademarks, design rights and trade secrets in their economic and societal contexts in the framework of European law.


The most important European harmonization and unification measures will be covered, as well as the remaining differences in protection and the underlying ideologies. The relationship of intellectual property rights to the basic EU freedoms, competition law and fundamental rights protection are also to be discussed.

TIME: I period
SELECTION CRITERIA: Participation is limited to 30 students. Students enrolled in the Master's Degree Programme in Law and Information Society (LIS) have priority in the selections. For the remaining places, the following criteria will be used to select the participants:
1. Students having participated in the course "Introduction to International Intellectual Property Law" (TLS)
2. Students having studied other intellectual property -specific courses.
3. Students having studied intellectual property as part of other courses, such as commercial law.
