General description

This course is aimed at both Master's and doctoral level students in the Faculty of Law to provide them with advice and support in their academic writing in English.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students should:
- be aware of the structure of a legal academic research paper.
- be more aware of the grammar and lexis used in academic text.
- be able to distinguish between formal and informal vocabulary.
- be able to understand the principles of textual organisation and flow.
- be able to use punctuation in academic English accurately.
- be able to prepare an essay or scholarly article.

Contents

- participating in classroom activities covering the key issues of legal academic writing.
- writing a paper.
- receiving an hour session of feedback on this paper with the teacher.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Pass/fail.
Active participation in lessons/ and group work. A minimum of 80% class attendance. Feedback on essay (compulsory).

Restricted entry 15 Master's students and 5 doctoral students. The course is mandatory for students in the LIS-programme.

Enrolment in NettiOpsu starts on 1.9.2014 at 10 am and ends on 8.9.2014 at 4 pm. Students will be chosen in the order of enrolment but priority will be given to LIS-students.

Teaching starts 11 September 2014.
