General description

This is an advanced course of Legal English that builds on the skills and competences acquired during the previous English courses (Modules 1-3). The emphasis of Module 4 lies on the active use of academic and professional English. The course already assumes an excellent knowledge of English including fluency and accuracy in speaking English, accuracy in writing and a wide general, academic and professional vocabulary. Targeted level of language proficiency: C1.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students should be able to
- formulate their own point of view on issues related to the field of law, and argue their opinion (both in speaking and writing) in a persuasive manner using professional language;
- analyse complex academic texts and legal documents in English, synthesise and apply relevant information;
- employ their analytical and argumentation skills to write a paper (e.g. essay, critical summary, research report) in English dealing with a topic in the field law according to English academic and professional writing conventions;
- prepare and deliver a brief presentation on a topic related to their discipline;
- employ the English language skills practiced in the course in their further study, research, and professional careers.
