Learning outcomes

To provide an experimental learning opportunity for technical and business people together to turn business ideas into startup businesses. To put software engineering and marketing skills into practice in a real-life startup project.

Contents

The course offers a hands-on experience in creating a software-based company. Students will work in teams using the lean startup process to turn ideas into business. During the course the students will work on idea generation to get started, customer development to elaborate their idea into a product that has a viable market, and business model design to build a business around the product. The engineering students focus on building software-based products using agile development process, tools and practices to rapidly iterate the products into something the customers will use. The products are based on web technologies, cloud services and mobile platforms. The business students work to validate customer demand and business model through methods of customer development and business model generation. The course offers an intense teamwork experience that will help to understand the value of modern teamwork tools, transparency, taking and sharing responsibility, commitments and accountability. The course will also familiarize the participants with the local startup communities. The primary mode of teaching is weekly team mentoring and monthly team progress presentations.

Teaching methods

Lectures, small group teaching, group work and independent work. These will be explained in detail in the beginning of the course.
