General description

The course covers many of the aspects to be taken into account in writing an academic research paper in English.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should:
- be able to assess themselves as writers
- be more familiar with Anglo-American academic writing conventions
- be able to compare and discuss cultural expectations
- be more aware of style and appropriateness in writing
- be able to analyse an English academic text and write a summary
- be able to construct a research paper in English building on their previous knowledge
- be able to write a text in English in terms of unity, focus and coherence
- be able to use collocations (fixed phrases) from reading of English texts
- be more certain about use of sentence structure, connectives, punctuation, articles
- be more critical and able to ask questions about academic writing, own writing in particular.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Pass/fail.
Attendance is not compulsory, but students are expected to attend the course and/or be familiar with the material provided by the teacher. Instructions will be given in class about the tasks below. Tasks during the course will include: - a letter of self-assessment (using grid); - a short essay on a controversy in own field; - a short plan of longer assignment (or work in progress) and a paragraph from within plan; - definition (for an expert and a non-expert reader). Tasks to be completed shortly after the course ends - Summary of an article of own choice; - Introduction to longer paper. - Longer assignment about 12 pages (practice essay) in discourse style presented on the course/in the materials pack; deadline to be negotiated; feedback on early draft from the English tutor. Verbal feedback on final version from teacher (face-to-face).

This course is compulsory for students from all departments in the faculty who are already writing or intending to write their master's thesis (pro gradu) in English. The course is especially relevant for Finnish and international students on the English-medium Master's Degree Programmes.
