Learning outcomes

Having taken the course, the student will be familiar with contemporary research on school-aged children and adolescents' peer relationships. S/he will be able to analyze and discuss peer relations and their links with adjustment and development from multiple perspectives. S/he will also be able to name and critically evaluate interventions aimed at improving peer relations.

Contents

Focusing on contemporary social and developmental psychological research, the course covers topics essential for understanding school-aged children and adolescents' peer relationships and the associations of these relationships with adjustment and development. The lectures will focus on core substantive areas such as peer status, peer influence, agonistic relationships and victimization, as well as the role of adults in children and adolescents' peer relations. In the seminars, interventions designed to address various problems related to peer relations will be introduced. Engaging in discussions and cooperative learning will be an essential part of the course.

Participation in the course requires that the student has already taken the aforementioned courses in Psychology at the University of Turku or corresponding courses at another university.

Participation in teaching means active participation in the lectures and seminars. The exercise consists of a group assignment, the outcome of which will be presented and discussed in one of the seminars. The essay will be a short essay written in English or Finnish and will be returned shortly after the last seminar.
