Learning outcomes

The course deepens the treatment of quantum mechanics given in earlier courses and gives an introduction to the role of molecular symmetry and its description using group theory. The student understands the basic mathematical structure of quantum mechanics and its fundamental results in connection with chemistry. The course helps to understand the language of quantum mechanics and more advanced courses on quantum chemistry. The student understands the principle of molecular symmetry and can apply it to simple chemical problems.

Contents

Quantum mechanics, symmetry. The mathematical foundation of quantum mechanics, some important results and quantum mechanics of angular momentum, techniques of approximation, molecular symmetry and group applications of group theory in chemistry.
