Learning outcomes

The course gives an introduction into the nature of the chemical bond and the optical and electrical properties of molecules. The main part of the course deals with statistical thermodynamics and the kinetic theory of gases, molecular interactions and phase transitions. The student understands the statistical nature of phenomena and can apply classical statistics to simple chemical problems, understands the non-covalent interactions between molecules and their importance to the behaviour of materials.


Molecules, statistics. The description of chemical bonding, optical properties of molecules, classical and quantum statistical distributions, partition functions and their relation to thermodynamic functions, applications of statistical thermodynamics in chemistry, the kinetic theory of gases, the electric properties of molecules, molecular interactions, phases and phase transitions.
