Learning outcomes

The student should be able to understand the relation between stars in our Galaxy and the universe of Galaxies. The course builds and furthers the arguments made in the Astrophysics I and II courses, and in the Stellar Structure and Evolution course, and connects stellar evolution, stellar atmospheres and other subjects to the broad Galaxies and Cosmology course. The student should be able, at the end of the course, to understand the broad problem of Galactic archaeology and 'near field cosmology' and apply this knowledge to current research.

Contents

Galactic astronomy. Stellar populations. Discussion of the Galactic disk, bulge and halo. Globular clusters. The Local Group. Observational and theoretical avenues.
