Learning outcomes

To learn the physical principles of operation for different kinds of particle detectors and how these principles are realised in practical devices. To understand the modes of operation suitable for various conditions.


The course provides an introduction to the physics behind particle detectors, the utilisation of that physics in practical instruments and the applications of detectors in experimental apparatus. The course covers a broad range of detection methods suitable for radiation from visible to gamma-rays and for detecting ions, electrons and other particles. Also the key concepts of data analysis and signal treatment are given. Students also perform measurements with several devices, analyze the results and learn about the properties of the detector and the sample.
