Learning outcomes

Spectroscopic measurements of electron and ion properties are amongst the most common methods for materials characterization, particularly for chemical properties and composition of surfaces and thin films. Electron and ion spectroscopies are also important research tools in atomic, molecular and solid state physics and in nanoscience. The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the physical principles of such measurement and to the design, properties and operation of the spectroscopic equipment. The basics of spectral analysis and data handling is covered.


Course starts with the introduction of the physical processes that cause electron and ion emission. Then the working principles, design and essential properties of electron spectrometers are covered, followed by practical examples from various field and a lab-work. Next, ion mass spectroscopy techniques, types of spectrometers and spectral analysis is covered, followed by examples and lab-work. Finally, some modern developments in specialized research methods and equipment, such as coincidence techniques, are presented.
