Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will be able to apply plasma physics in near-Earth space environment. The student will obtain further understanding and quantitative analysis skills on topics introduced on Introduction to plasma physics. The student will have an understanding of collisionless shocks and magnetic reconnection in space plasmas. The student will be familiar with the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere and their coupling; solar wind expansion and solar eruptions; space weather; and structure and dynamics of other planetary environments. The student will be familiar particle simulation methods used in space plasma physics.


Solar corona and solar wind; formation and structure of the magnetosphere; radiation belts; ionosphere; ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling; solar eruptions and magnetospheric dynamics; space weather; other planetary environments.
