Learning outcomes

This course introduces basic concepts and methods of mechanism design. Mechanism design is a branch of game theory that studies the reverse engineering problem: While game theory asks how we can predict the outcome of a given game, mechanism design asks whether a given outcome can be obtained by designing an appropriate game. Some influential classical results are introduces and some important future directions are discussed. Special attention will be given to a detailed study of the mechanisms that are used in the literature. Applications to the theory of auctions are considered if time permits.
