General description

This is a course about anthropogenic pressures and spatial planning in marine and coastal environments. The focus is in the Baltic Sea but the topic is generally applicable in also other areas. The course is organized jointly by the Department of Geography and Geology of the University of Turku and Environmental and Marine Biology of the Åbo Akademi University.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, students will have theoretical and methodological skills to tackle with real-world challenges around this topic.


Students learn to address at the same time aspects of the natural environment, human livelihood and use pressures. The course offers theoretical and methodological expertise that is relevant to marine and coastal planning from both scientific and practical-legislative perspectives.

Teaching methods

Lectures, individual work and group work. Also visits to some institutes and field work. The course requires rather much from the student. Students are expected not to have other time-demanding activities during the most intensive period of this course.
