Learning outcomes

Students will learn to make a diagnosis of the ecological and economic significances in the exploitation of wild species from nature. They should understand the challenges to confront when attempting to improve sustainability of resouce use and how to apply natural and social scientific theory in order to understand real-world resource management problems

Focus is in the exploitation and management of wild species exploited by humans in natural or semi-natural ecosystems. Examples of such human activities are logging, fishing, grazing, hunting, and collection of fuel wood and non-timber forest products. Particular attention will be paid to the challenges of implementing sustainable resource management in highly biodiverse ecosystems, in remote low-governance areas, and in socio-economic settings characterized by poverty and high dependence on local natural resources for subsistence and household economies. The book 'Diagnosing Wild Species harvest - Resource use and Conservation' (Salo-Sirén-Kalliola 2014) will be used as essential reading material.
