Learning outcomes

The aim is to develop a general understanding of the behavior of sulfur and metals in environments dominated by sulfide bearing bedrock/soil materials. After the course, students are expected to understand:
- The formation and occurrence of sulfide bearing geological environments
- Different types/sources of potentially toxic metal species
- How biogeochemical processes control the mobilization/immobilization of acidity and metals due to sulfur oxidation/reduction
- How sulfur isotopes can be utilized to determine the origin of sulfidic sediments and sulfide related pollution in water courses
- The dispersion of (latent) acidity and metals along different geochemical gradients from the source to recipient water courses
- How to identify and quantify environmental pollution in soil materials and water courses
- General principles of management/mitigation methods in mining and acid sulfate soil environments

Contents

The course focus on terrestrial and aquatic environments susceptible to acid rock drainage. The fundamental biogeochemical processes responsible for sulfur oxidation/reduction and the corresponding dispersion of (latent) acidity, sulfur isotopes and potentially toxic metal species along various geochemical gradients in recipient water courses will be taught. In addition to this theoretical frame work, environmental problems related to sulfide oxidation will be treated from a practical point of view through case studies, exercises and field- and laboratory work.

Lectures (20 h), homework assignments, excursion (1 day), lab work (2 days), written report.
